This service is designed to rescue, revive and restore precious images of Tipuna that adorn the walls of most Whare Nui. In many cases these images are the only surviving images of a Whanau member. Historic and family images on display are toanga. Many images are susceptible to moisture, fading and insect damage. This is most prevalent in very old images that used silver nitrate in the photographic emulsion. These images become tarnished and degraded. This also happens with many early colour prints, fading and images colour shift happens over time. Early colour images tend to have enhanced magenta hues and yellow highlights, these can be corrected if retrieved in time. One advantage is that many Whare Nui do not have many windows therefore sunlight bleaching is less obvious. Insect damage like silverfish is of most concern as the insect consumes the paper. Water damage is also an issue where mould and staining occurs. ¶
Site Visit
The location of the Marae will determine travelling costs.
Cataloguing
The images are taken down and catalogued and labelled with names etc. We would photograph the original wall so replacement images can be rehung in original position and order. It is expected that the process of appraising, cataloguing, packaging originals would take 2 to 3 hours.
Digital Restoration
The restoration work would be quoted on a scale of difficulty commensurate with the damage or degradation of the images. A badly damaged image could take up to 2 hours to restore. An image that only needed colour correcting could take only half an hour to restore.
Digital Colourising
The colourising work would be quoted separately from the restoration work. Colours are an approximation only of what the original colours may have been.
Restored Photograph Sizes
The majority of images we provide will be either A4 (297 x 210mm) or A3 (420 x 297mm) These will either be landscape or portrait orientation.
